Sony has shown an increased interest in porting games to PC, but it looks like their ventures may not stop just there. There's a chance that they may further consider expanding the PlayStation brand and its library into the mobile market, based on its latest patent.

According to Video Games Chronicle, SIE Japan, Sony's Japanese research and development division, filed a patent for a pair of left side and right side controller grips that more resemble the PlayStation 4 Dualshock than the newer Dualsense controller the PlayStation 5 uses. As the patent states, the device omits “a shaft portion that can be tilted by the user, and detect the tilting direction and tilting amount of the shaft portion.”

Through Bluetooth, PlayStation 4 Dualshocks can be paired with mobile devices. Controller grips can be a quality of life adjustment for users. And this could be Sony's desire to aim for a cloud-based gaming avenue, similar to Xbox's Xcloud. Sony CEO Jim Ryan had spoke about PlayStation's experiment with mobile gaming earlier in 2021, aiming to "reach millions of gamers outside of PlayStation's ecosystem", and bringing many IPs to mobile.

"The content developed by PlayStation Studios these past 25 years has created a wealth of IP and provided PlayStation with immersive experiences that evoke emotions and bring players on a journey," Ryan said at the time.

"We have been thinking about how players enjoy our content and have had some early success with experimenting with mobile games and apps to provide more choice to gamers. Mobile is just one of the areas we are exploring to reach millions of gamers beyond our platforms."
