For the better part of 25 years, the mainline Final Fantasy series has seen its home on the PlayStation platform. The newest entry, Final Fantasy XVI, will mark the first time since 1994 that a modern game will see release on a different platform, as it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive for the first six months. This news was confirmed via an official video "Play Like Never Before", highlighting other PS5 and current generation titles like God of War Ragnorok and NBA 2K23.
While Final Fantasy XVI has been listed as PS5 software, it remains unknown if the game will end up on PC or Xbox platforms, so it will be interesting to see how this develops in time. Chances are, FFXVI could see a backwards generation release on the PlayStation 4. Making the game a current gen console release would put stronger emphasis on fans investing in a PlayStation 5, a platform which is still seeing trouble landing on store shelves.
Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled to launch in the second quarter 2023.
