The very first Star Ocean game saw a redistribution on the Playstation Portable in 2008, at the time, the only legit means players in the US would have had a chance to enjoy it. Well, now in the age of Remake-a-Mania, the tri-Ace developed RPG will receive a newer facelift on the Playstation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. The development of Star Ocean lead to a split within the development team, causing some of the staff to depart and form studio tri-Ace. In 2015, tri-Ace was acquired by Nepro Japan, a primarily mobile game based industry. This hasn't affected tri-Ace's plans to continue developing games for consoles, as 2016's Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness was their latest release.
Star Ocean is noted for utilizing tech called Flexible Voice Driver, which allowed for audio voice clips to be used in battle, something that was a rarity for Super Famicom games at the time. First Departure R will also follow previous tri-Ace rereleases, 4K and Full HD remasters of Star Ocean The Last Hope from 2017 and Resonance of Fate in 2018.
Square Enix hasn’t announced a release date as of yet, or if First Departure will be a digital only or physical, so more details will be revealed in time.
