With Starfield being Bethesda's first new universe the studio, Todd Howard and staff seem to be taking considerable effort in its development cycle. For that matter, it feels like it's been an eternity since its initial reveal trailer and its first lengthy delay the game has faced.
Last May, it was announced that Starfield, along with Arkane's vampire hunting first person shooter, Redfall, would miss their launch window and both games were indefinitely delayed. It has now received an official release day announcement trailer, slated for September 9, 2023, along with a message from director Todd Howard.
"We have poured ourselves into this game, and even I'm surprised how much we can pour", Howard states. "We're playing the game all the time."
The upcoming space-faring role-playing game will be pushed back another four plus months. It does end up closer to the holiday season, though the caveat is widening the gap of Xbox Series X|S exclusives to look forward to in the second quarter of 2023. This June, they'll be hosting a Starfield Direct, which will take people into the studio to provide a more in-depth look at what it may offer.
"The game has many of the hallmarks that you'd expect from us, but it's also a very unique experience," Howard continues. "...we know you've waited a long time to play something new from us. Believe it or not, we're kind of the same, we miss it."
The Xbox brand has had a challenging time in rolling out timely exclusives, and while sales for the Series X has managed solid and respectable sales numbers, the lineup of first party content remains on the thin side, though tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush has been a sleeper surprise. With the acquisition of Bethesda, is the weight heavy on Starfield to be a big seller this holiday season?
