Street Fighter 6 Teaser Reveal & Capcom Fighting Collection Announcement

As was written previously, the reveal many had expected was made official after the finale of Capcom Pro Tour's 2021 season, which showcased various First to 5 exhibition sets featuring the best Street Fighter V players from around the world. This event was in place of Capcom Cup, which was cancelled due to complications from the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Following the final match between pro playing Street Fighter legend Daigo Umehara and Kawano (a fantastic battle between the old guard and the new generation of players), the countdown expired and viewers were first treated to an anthology of Capcom fighters in the Capcom Fighting Collection. Not burying the lead, but it can't go unstated how cool this happens to be. 10 fighting games, including Darkstalkers, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge, Vampire Savior: Lord of the Vampire, Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers' Revenge, and Vampire Savior 2: Lord of the Vampire.

Rounding out the collection is the 1996 fighter Red Earth (the first game to use Capcom's CP System III arcade hardware), Cyberbots: Full Metal Mayhem, Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix (known as Pocket Fighter), Super Puzzle Fighter II, and Hyper Street Fighter II. All games will have online play, complete with rolleck netcode. Cyberbots will be making its western debut.

Following that was a very brief peak that merely confirms Street Fighter 6's presence. There's little to go on, other than two notable things. Street Fighter director Takayuki Nakayama and producer Koichi Sugiyama spoke about Luke being an integral part of the series' future. It's telling that the future of Street Fighter is facing off with its legacy as Ryu and the energetic upstart square up for battle.

The other noteworthy detail is it appears Street Fighter 6 will be using the RE Engine, so Dimps, who developed SFIV and SFV, might not handle production. More information about this will be available this summer, so there currently isn't much to speculate on until further notice.

Is it a little soon to announce a Street Fighter 6? Possibly, Street Fighter V's last line of content was only several months ago. At the same time, Capcom probably learned from the mistakes of ushering out SFV just to sync with a new Pro Tour season, which lead to its divisive launch and initial lukewarm sales. Street Fighter V will likely be hosted through Combo Breaker, CEO, and EVO's 2022 events, so SF6's cycle will hopefully be different.
