With EVO (the Evolution fighting game tournament), taking place this week and wrapping up Sunday, the 21st, fighting game fans were in for a surprise. SNK vs Capcom: Chaos has made its way to Steam and is available now on the PC service, with plans to launch next week on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. This release will also come with rollback netcode.
SvC Chaos was originally released in 2003 and was developed by Play more. It was the third game serving as a crossover between SNK and Capcom at the time, and the second to be produced by SNK. Contrast to the Capcom-produced entries Capcom vs SNK: Match of the Millennium and Millennium Fight, SvC Chaos didn't utilize the familiar team-based structure of the King of Fighters games its system was based around. The reception was considered mixed among the fans, and Capcom was reportedly unhappy with the quality of the game. This led to a freeze in future plans to produce more along this line under then Capcom/Street Fighter president and director Yoshinori Ono. Under new leadership from Takayuki Nakayama.
With Capcom stunning the world with the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection last month, this renewed strong interest in the player base regarding future Vs themed fighting games. The fans alone aren't without the enthusiasm. Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto spoke in an interview with Dexerto that Capcom is eager to jump back into producing more crossover fighters.
“The development team at Capcom has big dreams,” he said. “Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Marvel vs Capcom game. Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Capcom-based SNK game.
“What we can at least do now is to show that, hey, these series exist. We love these games.
We hope that you do too, and maybe in the future, if people get to familiarize themselves with these series, then there may be future opportunities to make bigger games.”
SNK president Yasayuki Oda has also expressed great enthusiasm for wanting to work with Capcom again, as Terry Bogard will be a guest Character in this season's DLC lineup for Street Fighter 6.
