Tails Voice Actress Colleen O'Shaughnessy Not Returning For Sonic Prime

The Sonic Prime announcement will be ushering in a new take on the Sonic universe, much like the Sonic Boom series. Development and production will be headed by Sega of America, Wildbrain Studios (who previously worked on 2019's Mega Man Fully Charged), Netflix Animation, and Ben 10 creator Man of Action. Its theme will center around a multiverse concept, so much like Sonic Generations, there's a possibility of previous incarnations of Sonic crossing over.

It will be making that transition, however, without some of its noted performers reprising voice roles. In late January, Roger Craig Smith, who had been voicing Sonic since 2010, has been retired from the role by Sega. Recently, Colleen O'Shaughnessy, who has voiced Tails since 2014 and Charmy the Bee, verified via Twitter when asked if she will be returning to Prime, "No. Sorry to say I am not"

Cindy Robinson, who voiced Amy Rose since 2010, is also not returning. This isn't the first time that key voice actors have been recast in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. Ryan Drummond portrayed Sonic in the late 90's for the Sonic Adventure games and subsequent titles to 2004, which didn't leave many happy. Colleen provided Tails' voice for the Sonic the Hedge movie in his brief post-credits teaser cameo, which was a nice treat for the fans. As mentioned with Sonic Boom, Prime being a different incarnation would imply that the showrunners and directors want to present a refreshing take for characters.

Sonic Prime is set to have 24 episodes for its first season and is slated for a 2022 release.
