The First Real Look At Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Zero Dawn was a generational defining game for the PS4. Released in 2017, the game was such a success that it racked up awards faster than Billie Eilish. The stand out was its archy-based combat system. Nothing as deep, or as rewarding, has ever been done quite like this before.

When the sequel was announced last year, a lot of people got excited. Game Fix Show's own Spanish couldn't stop watching the announcement trailer.

That hype quickly faded though, as news on its development was scarce. We knew it was coming in 2021 but didn't know when. It's now almost June of 2021, and we had nothing new to report.

That all changed yesterday during Sony's newest State of Play which put Horizon Forbidden West into the forefront with a special 14-minute gameplay reveal.

We also learned a lot more about the story. Forbidden West takes place 6-months after the original game. The demo opens with a beautiful shot of post-apocalyptic San Francisco before it jumps to a group of raiders - one riding a machine - with Erend in tow.

It looks as though Aloy has a lot of new tricks in this game. The demo shows off her new gliding technique along with some sweet-looking new finishing moves and a new grappling hook that will allow her to fly through the air like Spider-Man. She even has a new electrified staff, in case she wants to get in close and personal, but her beard-and-butter is still her archery-based combat which continues to look amazing.

The demo shows off a few of the new environments that you will be fighting, climbing, and gliding through. The map in Forbidden West is supposed to be larger than Zero Dawn's map with a lot of different biomes, like underwater which was showcased in the demo.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic version of California, Utah, and Nevada. You will even be able to recognize iconic locations, like Yosemite Valley and the vine-covered remains of what was once the Golden Gate Bridge. Like the original, the locations are going to be varied from the lush forests of Utah to the ruined cities of California to the wide-open barren deserts of Nevada.

I am not doing any of this justice, just watch the video.

The game is still planned for a 2021 release date, but no date has been given at the time of this writing. It will be released for the PS4 and the PS5, with the PS5 version taking advantage of the console's increased processing power and SSD making loading times virtually non-existent.

Horizon may once again be a generational defining game and a must-own for any PS5 owner. This is going to be a huge title, both literally and figuratively speaking.

This could be the reason why I buy a PS5. If I can find one..

As always, this has been James with Game Fix. Game on everybody!
