The PlayStation 4's Days Are Numbered, According To Sony

The PlayStation 4 was certainly a rousing success since its launch, picking up off the late steam the PS3 carried towards the end of that console's life. For 8 years, the PS4 has sold over 116 million consoles, powered by its strong exclusives and accessibility. During the launch of the PlayStation 5, the 4 saw dual releases of modern games, and picked up the slack, as supply shortages affected performance of PS5 sales.

It looks like, however, writing is even more clearly written on the wall regarding the fate of the PlayStation 4. According to Sony's recent financial presentation, the road map going forward obviously has the PlayStation 5 as the future, but also a graph charts the focus of R&D for PC ports and mobile platforms. The PlayStation 4, linked with PS5, is looking to be phased out of Sony's plans for new major game releases by 2025.

Launching in November of 2013, the PS4 would be 12 years old in 2025. With releases such as Bloodborne, The Last of Us 2, Insomniac's Spider-Man, and God of War and FromSoftware's Sekiro winning Game Of The Year honors in 2018 and 2019 respectively, the PlayStation 4 was the ideal gaming platform, being strongly rivaled and eventually passed by the Nintendo Switch, in terms of lifetime sales in the US.

Nothing lasts forever. While a global pandemic slightly changed the mission statement, Sony had planned to wrap up PlayStation 4 focus and production not much long after the PS5's launch. Sure, it's still difficult to get your hands on Sony's hot new platform, but remaining tethered to developing high-end games on the aging hardware of the PlayStation 4 has been a hindrance for more than a calendar year that studios can ill afford. We've already seen it with WB Interactive cancelling last generation versions of Gotham Knights, this will become a regular occurrence.
