The Turbografx-16 Mini Revealed by Konami

Mini console mania continues to roll forward. Over the last three years, an interest in plug and play retro consoles has seen the demand for the NES Classic supercede its expectations that production couldn't be met. Nintendo followed up with the much acclaimed SNES Classic in 2017. Sony jumped on the bandwagon and took a shot at their own retro console with the Playstation Classic. I assume they took many shots to the head prior to doing so, as the Playstation Classic was such a bust of a mini console (discounted to $40 US at retailers like Walmart) that was so dead on arrival, AtGames served as the forensic to oversee the autopsy.

Konami decided to strike while this iron is still relatively tempered by announcing a Turbografx-16 Mini at this recent E3 2019 event. Back in 2012, Hudson Soft, the manufacturers on the Turbografx-16 (known as the PC Engine in other regions) merged with and becoming a subsidiary of Konami, giving them rights to all of their intellectual properties, notably Bomberman, Bloody Roar, Adventure Island, and the Bonk series. The console was received well in the 90's and was a quality device, but was regulated into obscurity in the United States by the powerhouses Nintendo and Sega at the height of the Bit Wars once the SNES and Sega Genesis began butting heads.

Currently six titles have been announced thus far:

- R-Type

- Ys Book I and II

- Alien Crush

- Ninja Spirit

- Dungeon Explorer

- New Adventure Island

The Japanese version gets a slightly different lineup:

- Dracula X

- Bonk's Adventure

- The Kung Fu Warrior

- Ys I and II

- Super Star Soldier

- Dungeon Explorer

Titles like Dracula X could be an indicator that perhaps more Turbografx-CD titles could arrive on this collection. A little surprised Bonk's Adventure isn't listed for the North American release, as Bonk was a bit of a mascot and the most recognizable face of the console. The lineup may not stand out as earth-shattering (no Blazing Lasers or an English release of Rondo of Blood?), but I like Konami being active and utilizing an extensive library of retro games under their umbrella. This a more forward move that may pay better dividends than releasing untranslated TG-16 games on the Wii U's Virtual Console.
