UbiSoft Announces Splinter Cell Remake

UbiSoft has announced that a remake of Splinter Cell is now in the plans. A much celebrated stealth\action series since its debut in 2002, the franchise being dormant since its last release in 2013 with Splinter Cell: Blacklist. UbiSoft Toronto will head development and it will be 100% rebuilt from their Snowdrop engine.

"Although we're still in the very earliest stages of development," stated producer Matt West in an interview, "what we're trying to do is make sure the spirit of the early games remains intact, in all of the ways that gave early Splinter Cell its identity. So, as we're building it from the ground up, we're going to update it visually, as well as some of the design elements to match player comfort and expectations, and we are going to keep it linear like the original games, not make it open world."

UbiSoft has not revealed anything resembling a time table for Splinter Cell's release, but given it has been quite a long time since there where any updates regarding the Prince of Persia remake (and the practically invisible Beyond Good And Evil 2), I wouldn't hold my breath for a constant string of regular updates. Being at the center of harassment scandals, poor conduct, and allegations since early 2020, UbiSoft has been trying to rehab its image in the eyes of fans and its employees. The announcements of remakes of longtime fan favorites feels like a cynical means of making any negative dissipate as quickly as possible.

Spawning seven mainline sequels and seven novels, as well as an upcoming animated series and a film adaptation that has spent more than a decade in development hell, Splinter Cell has been considered one of UbiSoft's flagship franchises.
