Ubisoft Shuts Down Studio Freestyle Games, Lays Off 185 Employees

European studio trimmed, as a part of company's restructuring

As Ubisoft continues to right their ship, more jobs are cut and more consolidation is in tow for the Assassin's Creed developer. The holdings/development company has announced they are closing down Freestyle Games (formerly known as Ubisoft Leamington), the developer of once-popular rhythm game DJ Hero, from 2009. In a statement Ubisoft provided to Video Games Chronicle, they provided the following:

“As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritize projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site.

“Unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition”

With talks of the company potentially being up for sale (more so exploring options), Ubisoft has seen a turnabout not quite in their favor on the video game publishing and development front. Assassin's Creed: Shadows has been delayed by a month, the studio's free-to-play multiplayer shooter XDefiant is shuttering down after player retention dropped considerably, and their big self-proclaimed "AAAA" release Skull & Bones has underperformed.
