In 2021, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown was released on the PlayStation 4 (with backwards compatibility on the PS5) with an updated visual style, using the Dragon Engine. The latest iteration of the fifth installment in Sega's 3D fighter will be making its way to Steam, dubbed Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. Along with supporting rollback netcode, with some new quality-of-life additions, as well as a balance patch for the roster.
The trailer showcased no gameplay, but the list of added features to Virtua Fighter: R.E.V.O. are as follows from the official Steam page:
Rollback Netcode support, gorgeous 4K visuals with updated high-res textures and more.
• Custom Combatants: Enter the ring with one of 19 playable characters. Master each of their unique fighting styles and customize them with distinctive costumes and items.
• The Full Experience: Enjoy the pinnacle of Virtua Fighter as you battle it out across your favorite modes like Rank Match, Arcade, Training, and Versus
• Crush the Competition: Take on challengers from around the world as you compete with up to 16 players in new online modes including Tournaments and League.
It was revealed that SEGA has a new Virtua Fighter game in the works, no verification that R.E.V.O. is the intended project that was speculated. Using VF5 as a gateway for new fans potentially interested in the series, while also serving the longtime players who have enjoyed the game since the Xbox 360 days is rather ideal.
