Lollipop Chainsaw Will Be Getting A Full Remake Next Year From Dragami Games

Teases and rumors had been floating around for a little more than a month, but it's now officially confirmed. According to IGN, Lollipop Chainsaw, from the brain of Goichi Suda (the founder of Grasshopper Manufacture, No More Heroes) and James Gunn (a head writer on the game), along with Masahiro Yuki (Tsukihami no Kamen, Shadows of the Damned), is having a remake in development for 2023, courtesy of Yoshimi Yasuda.

Dragami Games, who inherited 15 titles from Kadokawa Games in a sale (including the Demon Gaze series, Relayer, and √Letter), announced that a revival of the 2012 cult hit will be in the works for next year. Dragami Games is led by Yoshimi Yasuda, who previously worked on the original Lollipop Chainsaw, and will retain some original developers of the game, along with new staff members, minus James Gunn. Yasuda clarified that due to copyright issues, the original music will not return, but will aim to take advantage of the advancements in programming software to improve on the mechanics of the original game.

"Unfortunately, various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw", Yasuda explained, regarding the choice to bring the game back, "and it has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles."

"We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot. As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavor."

Lollipop Chainsaw was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. While fans loved the tongue-in-cheek writing and self-aware  western exploitative slapstick, the gameplay was deemed between average to slightly less than favorable, with many publications stating it brings little, if anything, new to the genre.

In Lollipop Chainsaw, you play as 18 year old cheerleader and secret zombie hunter Juliet Starling is on her way to meet up with her boyfriend Nick, but a zombie outbreak occurs and Nick is attacked. To prevent him from turning, Juliet decapitates him with her chainsaw. Despite being a severed head, he remains sentient, and Juliet tags him along her belt, and accompanies her in her mission to reseal the zombie realm.
