Overwatch 2's PvE Content Is Officially Done, Will Offer Free Heroes Next Month

Overwatch's story-based player vs environment content has reached the end of its road, based on sources. According to Bloomberg's Jason Scheier, the development staff is planning on permanently cancelling its player vs environment features due to lack of interest and poor's sale, as the competitive shooter is still searching for ways to re-establish its identity.

"Last year, Overwatch 2 received a paid pack of three PvE story missions that sold poorly, according to people familiar with the business, which was a major reason for the cratering bonuses," Scheier wrote. "In January, as part of a company-wide reduction in its work force, the majority of the team behind Overwatch 2’s PvE was laid off.

Overwatch 2 developers were informed that the company does not plan to finish any of the remaining planned PvE content and will instead double down on competitive player vs. player gameplay, according to the people familiar."

On Tuesday, game director Aaron Keller announced the team will offer Overwatch 2 Heroes for free at the launch of Season 10, so players will no longer be required to pay for premium battle passes to access them. This will remove the grinding that some fans of the game have grown to despise.

“Heroes are one of the most exciting additions to the game and we want all of our players to have immediate access to them when they launch, which is why I’m thrilled to share that Venture and all future heroes will be free for all players when they launch,” Keller spoke in the statement.
