PlayStation Architect Mark Cerny Offers Preferred SSD Solution For The PS5

Given the data size of your modern game application, memory expansion for the the next gen consoles is almost guaranteed to be a must, and it's essential to shop around for SSDs based on download speeds and loading times. For the Xbox Series X, the solid state drive of choice is the Seagate expansion card. The Playstation 5, the most optimal recommendations came down to two choices, the Seagate and Western Digital.

The mind behind the design of the PS5, Mark Cerny, took to Twitter and spoke about his recommendations. While Seagate does adequately meet the requirements, he did NOT choose the Seagate, opting to go with Western Digital's WD_BLACK SN850 with Heatsink and transfer speeds up to 7000MB. High transfer speeds are good for your hardware's ability to complete complex tasks.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Cerny did approve of Seagate's FireCuda 530 as an alternative. Since Sony opened up the door for memory expansion, they've listed the requirements for solid state drives, but warned that some may run the risk of not working, and models without heatsink or proper cooling will cause the drive to rise in temperature from overwork and could easily melt the plastic on your PlayStation 5.

The Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850 2tb card is priced on Amazon for (US)$449. The FireCuda NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD with 500GB goes for roughly (US)$119 at most retailers.
