RUMOR: Sony Allegedly In Preliminary Talks To Bring Helldivers II To Xbox

With its blend of humor and near seamless co-op multiplayer action, Helldivers II has become wildly popular among fans and has proven to be quite a successful hit for PlayStation. Since its February 2024 launch, the PvE third person shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios has maintained a top spot on Steam charts, and as of late March, it has sold 8 million units, according to insiders. The conversation that naturally has come up across the socials regarding this title, what are the odds of it coming to the Xbox?

Information can be taken with a grain of salt, and there isn't much reason for Xbox fans to immediately begin salivating for the opportunity to fire off Strategems just yet. The sources (i.e. speculation) comes from Shpeshal_Nick of the XboxEra Podcast. Having a reputation for breaking insider news around games, Nick infers that the new PlayStation Interm CEO, Horoki Totoki could possibly be in very early consideration for Helldivers II to come to Xbox.

We know that PlayStation has a new CEO at the moment. I think the CEO might be a little more open to certain things. What I've heard, again, just the rumor that I've heard, is that there may be some very very early - very early - preliminary discussions about the possibility of Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox.

Remember what I said, though. It doesn't mean it's coming. I just said there are very early discussions - what I've heard is there are some very early discussions about it. It could all fall to pieces; they might not come to an agreement on something; who the hell knows?

The odds of this happening are slim, but not impossible. Under outgoing CEO Jim Ryan's tenure, these talks may not have even been considered. If PlayStation has anything they prioritize, and held in high regard, has been the demand and success of their exclusive game library. The PS5 has a good number of critically acclaimed games to bolster the appeal of the console, it would make sense why keeping a popular title in their own ecosystem.

Counterpoint; a lot of hefty financial decisions has hampered the fiscal success of the PlayStation and its brand, failing to hit its projected sales goals. There also won't be any major first party AAA games until April of 2025, according to Totoki. With such a large gap in software, a way to shore up any light months in software sales could be to lift the console exclusivity and port Helldivers II to the Xbox Series X|S. As publisher, Sony could make a great deal of income, and Helldivers II may be welcomed to a wider audience. The Xbox brand has already shown its ambition towards releasing some of its critically acclaimed games to other platforms, like the rhythm action game Hi-Fi Rush, developed by the Bethesda-owned Tango Gameworks, making its way to the PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Perhaps there will be more to come with this story...
