Super Mario Bros. Movie Closing In On Record-Breaking Box Office Record

While controversy followed it since the voice casting announcement of Chris Pratt playing the eponymous plumber, and a population misunderstanding the aggregated score on Rotten Tomatoes, the Super Mario Bros. Movie has enjoyed a very successful opening weekend. Along with multiple generations of fans growing up with Nintendo and a strong advertising campaign, the film was perfect for the holiday weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, with a projected $137 million for the three-day opening weekend, the Nintendo mascot's return to the big screen strode comfortably by 2016's Finding Dory's opening weekend box office ($135 million), making it the second biggest opening animated movie in the United States, behind Pixar's The Incredibles II. This past Friday, it netted another $55 million, totaling its five day week start at $195,000,000 and is projected to gross over $360 million worldwide before the end of the weekend. Sonic the Hedgehog's US box office was $306 million on a $71 million dollar opening weekend, for a frame of scale.

If it hits those projections, Illumination's film will be on pace to become one of the highest grossing animated films of all time, and has a chance to be the highest grossing video game movies on the planet. That record is currently held by 2022's Warcraft, from Universal Pictures ($439,048,914), with Warner Bros. Pictures' Detective Pikachu behind it ($433,230,304).
