Following a very strong advertising campaign, the highly anticipated release of Tekken 8 has been dominating the charts, namely in the United Kingdom. According to a report from TheGamer.com, since launching on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC last Friday, the latest sequel in the King of Iron Fists tournament saw its physical copy sales numbers top the charts, dethroning the Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
Tekken 8's strong physical sales numbers also doubled the launch numbers of Street Fighter 6's June 2023 release, marking one of the first times Bandai Namco's 3D tournament fighting game has outperformed Capcom's juggernaut. Not really an indictment on Capcom's flagship franchise, both series have been staples of the fighting game scene for decades now. The difference likely can be seen in the popularity of each series preceding games. Street Fighter V had a rough start, but in the end sold decently enough. The popularity of Tekken 7 was pretty consistent, aided by the inclusion of wacky guest characters and a strong roster and tournament scene.
