One of the Atari 2600's most beloved games, Yars Revenge, is making a return. With development duties handed to WayForward Technologies, known for their work on the Shantae series, River City Girls, Contra: Operation Galuga, Yars Rising turns the space shooter into a side-scrolling explorative action game.

It was revealed at Nintendo's Indie World Direct presentation April 17th, Yars Rising will be an original spin on this Atari classic in 42 years. Yars: Recharged, released in 2022, was a remake of the original 2600 game. Yars Revenge was designed by renowned former software developer Howard Scott Warshaw. There was a sequel, Yars Return, released in 2005, to less critical acclaim.

Play as the young hacker, Emi Kimura, as she starts to uncover the dark secrets of mysterious corporation, Qotech. In this brand new side-scrolling Metroidvania from acclaimed developers, WayForward, take the Yars universe to a whole new level and unlock something hiding deep inside of you.

Stealth elements are to be implemented in Yars Rising, so plowing through won't always be an option. Mini games inspired by the original Yars Revenge will be included, blending the old with the new. Explorative action titles, commonly known as "Metrodvanias", have proven to be a genre that goes strong. Will fans take to this very different interpretation of the the Yars' universe? 

Yars Rising is expected to be released in 2024 for the Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PS4, and PC (Steam)
