Dead Space Co-creator Glen Schofield Departs Striking Distance Studios Following Callisto Protocol Flop

Striking Distance Studios, a development team based out of California, will see new leadership following the departure of Glen Schofield, who played a part in conceptualizing Dead Space. Current Chief Officer Steve Papoutsis will take over, according to a report from Engadget. According to Bloomberg, Schofield left to "pursue other opportunities".

Its highly anticipated game from the team, The Callisto Protocol, a 2022 survival horror title seen as a spiritual successor to the aforementioned Dead Space, saw its parent company Krafton invest $160 million dollars into its development. The South Korean holdings company had anticipated it would sell 5 million copies. However, it performed rather poorly in its initial several weeks, and was also met with poor reviews due to many technical errors throughout the game.

While it peaked as high as sixth on UK sales charts, Krafton lowered its expectations to 2 million. This led to layoffs of 32 employees within Striking Distance in order to recoup losses back in August, according to a report from Eurogamer. Development on The Callisto Protocol wrapped up with the release of The Final Transmission DLC. Along with its poor performance issues, The Callisto Protocol may have been undercut by the release of, ironically, the Dead Space Remake just a little more than a month later.
