Developer Wayforward And Konami Team Up Again For Contra: Operation Galuga

For the second time, Konami has turned to game developer and publisher Wayforward (Shantae and the Seven Sirens, Spidersaurs, River City Girls) to bring their classic run-n-gun series back for another run. Announced during today's Nintendo Direct September 2023 was Contra: Operation Galuga, which will be coming to all platforms. Wayforward and Konami previously collaborated with Contra 4 for the Nintendo 3DS in 2007, renowned for its tight gameplay and challenging difficulty.

The press release for the game reads as such:

Introducing a new entry in the legendary Contra series! Contra: Operation Galuga is a thorough reimagining of the classic run 'n' gun NES/arcade game from the 1980s, featuring timeless gameplay, iconic weapons, modern graphics and sound, new stages, new enemies and bosses, new play mechanics, and intense co-op combat for up to two players in Story Mode or four players in Arcade Mode!

Take control of elite Contra commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as they battle the Red Falcon terrorist group, which has turned the once-peaceful Galuga Islands into an all-out warzone where the fate of mankind hangs in the balance.

The true Contra legacy begins now!

This will be the first new Contra game since 2019's Contra Rogue Corps., produced in-house by Konami. With its change in play style, rudimentary difficulty, and minimal artistic visual direction, it was met with middling and unfavorable reviews. A new generation will have a chance to bust out the Konami Code once again.

Contra: Operation Galuga will be coming in early 2024 for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam
