We had been talking about it in the past. After two years of no live venues for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3 is back from the grave with plans to host its first in-person event since 2019. According to a report from GamesIndustryBiz.com, E3 2023 will be back as a live and online event at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with live event organizer Reedpop orchestrating the proceedings.
Reedpop, the parent company of GamesIndustryBiz, as well as the event hosts for conventions such as the annual PAX shows (Penny Arcade Expo), Metaverse, C2E2 (the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo), and Star Wars Celebration, has seemingly rescued E3 from irrelevance, and could be the direction the presentation needed in the modern landscape.
“For years, we’ve listened, heard, and studied the global gaming community’s feedback", spoke ReedPop’s global VP of Gaming Kyle Mardsen-Kish. "E3 2023 will be recognizably epic—a return to form that honors what’s always worked—while reshaping what didn’t and setting a new benchmark for video game expos in 2023 and beyond.”
It appears the right people are in charge of working around many of the changes in the games industry that E3 failed to adapt to in the rise of the digital age, but is it news that's about three to five years too late? Even before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the previous two years of E3 and rendering them to online features, major game companies like Nintendo and Sony has previously pulled out of the showcase and hosted their own exclusive presentations like State of Play and Nintendo Directs. On top of a security breach in 2019 where hackers revealed the information of 2000 journalists that attended the ESA, there's quite a reputation to mend.
Does Reedpop boast the chops to rejuvenate an event that had been losing its luster and air of importance for the last 8 years back into a must-see venue for game developers, publishers, journalists, and fans?
