Massive Data Breach Reveals 10 Years Of Insomniac's Planned Projects, Including X-Men Game

December 19th saw a hacker team known as Rhysida steal a large chunk of information from PlayStation developer Insomniac Games, the team behind Marvel's Spider-Man 2. According to a Reddit thread, using ransomware to hijack the data, the team demanded $2 million in bitcoin in a week or they would release everything they have obtained to the public. Sony has been working fast to find a resolution to the situation, as many employees' personal data is now at the mercy of Rhysida.

Insomniac and Sony have attempted to put a cap on what has been revealed, which includes early build gameplay for Marvel's Wolverine. Even the Reddit thread deleted many of the links in an effort to quell the situation, but it appears to have spiraled completely out of control. Once it ends up on the internet, it's there forever. Keeping the private information out of it, here's a short list of what is known to the public, as of this writing.

  • Insomniac's sales projections
  • Logo design for an X-Men Game
  • PlayStation Studio's Steam Sales
  • Marvel's Wolverine (play-testing footage, character and cast, a storyboarded cutscene, etc.)
  • Pricing For Marvel's Venom: Lethal Protector
  • New Ratchet & Clank
  • Spider-Man: The Great Web game description

Many of these concepts are nothing concrete and could be subject to change. There's a strong chance that this data breach could cause a great upheaval in Insomniac's roadmap, as the foreseeable future is seemingly precarious. More importantly, here's hoping the staff and employees at the studio remain safe.
