Nintendo Of America President Hints That Switch Successor May Support Backwards Compatibility

The success of the Nintendo Switch over the last seven years has been centralized around its accessibility and convenience. While rumors of the next console that's in the works have yet to be confirmed, one point has been on the topic of conversation; backwards compatibility. In the past, games you bought on one platform couldn't be ported over to a successor, leaving them locked on platforms.

It seems there might be a major change coming to how Nintendo fans can preserve their libraries. In an interview with Inverse.com, the president of Nintendo of America Doug Bowser spoke about the company's Nintendo Account platform will be a part of their long-term plans.

“In the past, every device we transitioned to had a whole new account system,” Bowser indicates. “Nintendo Account will allow us to communicate with our players if and when we make a transition to a new platform, to help ease that process or transition."

With game save files attached to your Nintendo account, matters like moving from console to console is already incredibly easy. It now appears that the company is embracing the idea of backwards compatibility from the Switch's successor to the hybrid handheld is an ideal way to go. We have seen Microsoft structure this means of preserving their library for their players. Sure, there weren't a lot of Wii U players, but it leaves most of them upset that their Virtual Console purchases will remain in obscurity. Better late than never.
