REVEAL: First Teaser Look At Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves

SNK fans get a sneak peek at the first new Fatal Fury game in over two decades! If you've been around the orbit of fighting game talk throughout the late 2000's, especially in the rise of competitive fighting games, there's a chance you may have seen or heard the name Garou: Mark of the Wolves pass through the lips, or heard of Rock Howard from Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium. Considered one of the purest, in-depth 2D fighting games, and widely considered SNK's best ever, it was released at a time where sprite-based fighting games were rapidly fading into obscurity.

In 2020, SNK director Noboyuki Kuroki stated he was very much interested in developing a sequel to the much beloved, but relatively obscure fighter. During last weekend's EVO tournament, a very brief snippet of its follow-up, titled Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves, was revealed

The action and visuals, while very fast, bear a resemblance to King of Fighters XV and possibly utilizes Unreal Engine 5. It has a noticeably different approach to detail and lighting effects from KOF XV, but this shouldn't be all too surprising, with the two projects so closely related. Terry Bogard and Rock Howard display some of their signature specials and poses, while audio of other Mark of the Wolves characters like Bonne Jenet, King of the Dinosaurs/Tizoc, and Gato (all three of whom are in KOF XV) can be heard over the map screen.

In 2016, an interview from the staff working on King of Fighters XIV revealed sprite work for what would've been a Garou 2, but was scrapped. This was likely due to the burdening financial woes that caused SNK to go bankrupt and later bought by Playmore. A bit of a shell of their former selves, the ambitious sequel ended up on the cutting room floor, while SNK themselves lost their influence in North America by 2002. Mark of the Wolves only saw a home port on conventional consoles by way of the 2001 release on the Sega Dreamcast. This was already towards the end of Sega's final short-lived console, so in a medium that was considered obsolete, to catch wind of it on a console who's days were numbered made Mark of the Wolves one of the most unheard of sleeper fighting games.

Former SNK Artist Aki Senno, who is more commonly known by her pen name Tonko, released some teaser artwork in 2022 featuring Rock Howard, Billy Kane, and antagonist Cain Heinlein with the announcement "NEW FATAL FURY-GAROU GREENLIT".

Naturally still in development, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves currently does not have a release date window.
