Formally announced alongside a plethora of news from Marvel Studios, X-Men '97 will be a revival of the 90's animated series, picking up where the original series has left off. According to The Wrap, we have learned that living voice actors of the original show will return and reprise their roles, and others will be recast in different roles.
“This is the first X-Men title produced by Marvel Studios,” speaks Brad Winderbaum, head of Television, Animation, and Streaming at Marvel Studios in an interview during This Week In Marvel. “What an amazing first step to reintroduce audiences to the X-Men with a look at one of the most pinnacle eras of the X-Men comics, which was the ‘90s. That iconic style that has its roots in Chris Claremont, and is celebrated in Jim Lee, and then again in ‘The Animated Series.’”
The returning cast members as of this writing are
Cal Dodd - Wolverine
Lenore Zann - Rogue
George Buza - Beast
Adrian Hough - Nightcrawler
Christopher Britton - Mister Sinister
Catherine Disher - Jean Grey
Chris Potter - Gambit
Alison Sealy-Smith - Storm
Alyson Court - Jubilee
New cast members on board to provide voices are a hearty combination of industry veterans and newer faces such as Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio. Executive producer will be Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf). Other producers include names familiar with the original X-Men animated series from the past, such as Eric and Julia Lewald, who were showrunners, and director Larry Houston.
The X-Men Animated Series ran for 76 episodes across five seasons on the Fox Kids animated block. It was a staple of Saturday morning cartoons and defined animated programming throughout the early 90's.
