While Joe Dante's 1984 horror/comedy Gremlins has been a cult classic, little was seen from the franchise after 1990. Many efforts to produce a sequel never came to fruition over the decades until now. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai marks its return for the first time in over 30 years, and aims to explore much of the mystery surrounding the adorable, yet enigmatic little creature.   

Produced and written by Steven Spielberg and Tze Chun (Gotham, short film Kitchen Sink), Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will serve as a prequel to the 1984 film. It follows the tale of 10-year old Sam Wing meets Gizmo. Along with Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey across 1920's Shanghai, China to return Gizmo to his home, while being pursued by a hostile army of Gremlins and a power-hungry industrialist.

Having faced countless delays since being given the greenlight in 2019, Secrets of the Mogwai was approved for 10 episodes. Franchise creator Joe Dante was brought on board as a consultant in 2020. Comedian and television show host Howie Mandel, however, will not be reprising his role as Gizmo. A.J. Locascio (Voltron: The Legendary Defender, Incredibles II) plays the chittering little mascot. 

The two original films were black comedies, and while not particularly geared towards children, were no doubt viewed by youngsters in the mid-80's and 90's. Gremlins 2: the New Batch focused on lighter themes and slapstick, while still retaining a lot of the macabre humor, even seeing an NES action video game.
