CD Projekt RED Has Plans For A Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

While it's had a rocky, and one may say controversial, development cycle of Cyberpunk 2077 that had many fans questioning the integrity of Polish studio CD Projekt RED, it's without question in their future plans. These ideas for their roadmap are laid out via a report regarding their long-term strategic growth outlook, details that include more additions to the Witcher franchise.

The Witcher projects, are dubbed "Project Polaris" and "Project Canis Majoris". "Polaris" will launch the new Witcher trilogy, currently planned with a six-year publishing cycle. "Project Canis Majoris" is a project that will be handled by an external studio, with close supervision from staffers who have worked on the previous games in the series. The name of the team tasked with development will likely be revealed in due time, and the game will use Unreal Engine 5.

A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed "Orion", will take place in the established world of Cyberpunk 2077 and will "further develop the potential embodied by this universe". Orion will be developed by CDPR's newly formed Boston hub, along with their Vancouver studio. This internal expansion (if one were to coin a phrase, even though it's redundant) is intended for CD Projekt RED to further tap into the talent of the North American development field.

Game-crashing glitches and bugs may have hampered Cyberpunk 2077 at the beginning of its launch in December 2020, but the futuristic RPG has seen a resurgence in recent weeks, as the game passes the 20 million units sold threshold. Updates to improve performance, along with the recent release of the Netflix exclusive anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a standalone story animated by studio Trigger (Kill La Kill, SSSS. Gridman) saw increased engagement in the game.
