Microsoft Ends Game Development For The Xbox One, Will Continue To Support Cloud Streaming

While the Xbox Series X|S family of consoles have seen its issues hamper the console's commercial success, Microsoft has seen much better performance following its launch than the company's predecessor, the Xbox One. The recent strong showing during Xbox's Games Showcase, which saw the return of Fable, Forza Motorsport, the RPG Avowed from Obsidian, and a long line of games from within Xbox's in-house studios, with over 20 games gracing their launches next year.

2024 looks considerably more promising for exclusive Xbox games on the current generation systems. This does mean that the previous generation's run for native software has its end, as according to an interview with Axios, Microsoft's studios have made certain to shift the focus of game development to the current gen hardware, as stated by Xbox Games studio chief Matt Booty. This is a move that shouldn't be a surprise to many.

"We've moved on to Gen 9," Booty says, regarding the Xbox Games Showcase's trailers. While the Xbox One won't have any in-house teams are no longer producing software for it, the console will still be able to access modern games via Microsoft's Cloud Streaming. "That's how we'll maintain support."

Last January, Microsoft had discontinued manufacturing of Xbox One consoles, as focus began to primarily shift towards production of the Series X|S line. This is a benefit for game development, as it could mean delays on high-end projects will be reduced. Most third party studios ended up cancelling previous generation versions of games, like Warner Bros. Interactive decision with Gotham Knights, in order to optimize performance.
