Mortal Kombat Teaser Indicates A Release Date Announcement

The Mortal Kombat Twitter account released a rather cryptic video of a ticking clock, indicating the potential announcement of a new entry. In the video, the hand begins at 9 and makes its way to 12. However, it never actually lands on the 12. There's static interference, and the hand skips over to 1. Very peculiar.

The speculation is surrounding whether or not this is going to be a reboot of Mortal Kombat 1, if it's going to be a Mortal Kombat game at all. I know Ed Boon likes to play with fans and his followers on social media, but the beans were already spilled about a new MK game being in the works, hinted at being close to finished, during a Warner Bros. conference call. Unless this ends up being DC Universe vs Mortal Kombat sequel, this seems pretty obvious.

Let us run with this theory; Mortal Kombat 9 is the first new Mortal Kombat entry following the end of the Midway era, essentially ushering the franchise back into the mainstream and redefining the fighting system. MK9 altered events during the first three games and retconning canon, leaving prominent Earthrealm warriors like Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Jax as revenants under control of the sorcerer Quan Chi. They would be freed upon the defeat of he and the elder god Shinnok at the hands of Johnny Cage. The villain of Mortal Kombat 11, Kronika, rewrites time and events effectively. Based on where the lore stands, a retelling of the ninth tournament seems very likely, with the chance of including a lot of the newer characters who have been added to Mortal Kombat since.

We'll find out at some point. The clock is literally ticking...
