Finally after what has felt like 10 years, the Atari VCS is getting a release. In an official statement released earlier today. The Atari VCS Team announced that they are starting to ship out the promised units from their Indiegogo campaign way back in 2018.

Announced back in June of 2017 at E3 and with the campaign coming a year later. The campaign asked for $2,955,228 and ended with $3,058,123. A little over what they were asking for.

The "spiritual successor" to the original Atari console, this new one features that classic woodgrain Atari design, with some modern flavors.

It features USB 3.0, HDMI, WiFi, and has Bluetooth connectivity.

The system was built around the AMD Ryzen R1000 chipset and a Radeon graphics card. The system itself is fully capable of running games such as Fortnite and Borderlands 2.

It is going to launch with 100 classic Atari Games.

As for the OS, it will be running a Linux based OS that was specifically designed to allow users to install other Linux-compatible apps.

Along side the 100 classic, you also have access to the "Antstream Arcade". A game streaming service that supports titles from the Amiga, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and other arcade games.

Don't like Linux? Easy fix, you can boot the console into "PC Mode" and load into any other OS you want using an external USB drive. This will open up a lot of options.

The creators are saying this is an "Open" console, meaning you can basically do whatever you want with it. Play games, creator your own, stream videos & music, anything you mind wants. This system could be a better version of the Chromebox because of it's open-endedness.

Now for the price. The price is going to hurt. It's going to retail for $389 bucks. You could put together your own RaspberryPi system, which is capable of doing everything this console can do, for a lot cheaper.

You can pre-order the console now from the Atari VCS site, Wal-Mart, and even Gamestop.

Could this be the return of Atari? It might be looking that way.
