Voice Actress Jennifer Hale Reveals She Was Paid Under $2,000 For Metal Gear Solid Performance

As the SAG-AFTRA strike appears to be drawing to a close with the sides bridging gaps in negotiations, there has been recent discussion that should the talks fail, video game voice actors and motion capture artists considered a work stoppage. There was a previous strike in the video game industry in 2016, with many talents raising their voices, used to bring the personalities to life for fans of popular franchises like The Last of Us, Halo, and Street Fighter, to speak about the discrepancy in pay between the talent behind the microphone and the millions of units sold.

Among the voice actors leading the charge at the time included Wil Wheaton, Elias Toufexis, and Metal Gear voice actors David Hayter (Snake), Phil LaMarr (Vamp), and Jennifer Hale (Naomi Hunter). Speaking of Metal Gear Solid, the veteran Canadian-American voice actress was elaborating about the disconnect between the CEO's and employees' pay during an episode of the My Perfect Podcast show, she revealed that while Metal Gear Solid made roughly $178 million dollars in 1998, her performance paid her $1,200. While Hale has spoken about said game (based on a 2011 article from The New Yorker), she never officially addressed by name until her interview with Simon Parkin.

Hale, a member of SAG-AFTRA and the current voice of Bayonetta, was asked what she would like to see changed in the industry, her response; "Residuals for games on a flexible structure that honours the indie developers, that honors the budgets and capacities of teams. I would like to see that." With what mainstream video games gross, the adjustment would see the programmers and voice/motion capture talent get paid accordingly, based on the success of the game.
