Xbox Live Gold Will Become Game Pass Core, 'Games With Gold' Program Coming To An End

Continuing a busy week for Microsoft following the victory against the FTC, some changes are coming to Xbox's subscription format coming in the early fall. With the launching of Game Pass Core, Xbox Live's services will be integrated into this evolution, blending the listing of games added to the Game Pass catalog catalog with online multiplayer.

On September 14th, Xbox Live Gold members will become Game Pass Core members automatically. The pricing will be $9.99US a month, and $59.99US for a year. If you're already a subscriber to Xbox Live Gold, your membership and pricing will not change, and the 25 games on the catalog will be available to you.

This does mean that the Games With Gold program is coming to an end on September 1st. That felt inevitable, once the deals withered down to two selections per month, it would've been implausible to see it continuing. Once Backwards Compatibility came wrapped up towards the end of 2021, the writing was on the wall. Games you've already downloaded, including Xbox 360 titles, will remain available.

With this evolution, we’re saying farewell to Games with Gold. We wanted to use this opportunity to re-imagine how to include content with this subscription. We found that the answer to the most compelling catalog was to leverage select titles from our Xbox Game Pass catalog.

The list of titles available via Game Pass Core are:

  • Among Us
  • Descenders
  • Dishonored 2
  • Doom Eternal
  • Fable Anniversary
  • Fallout 4
  • Fallout 76
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears 5
  • Grounded
  • Halo 5: Guardians
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • Human Fall Flat
  • Inside
  • Ori & The Will of the Wisps
  • Psychonauts 2
  • State of Decay 2
  • The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Xbox Live, which launched November 14th, 2002, served as the online multiplayer and digital media hub for the Xbox platform for 20 years, serving as one of the bridges that crossed gaming from conventional hobby to a growing mainstream form of entertainment. As all things must pass, so does the end of an era.
