We won!

For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

After continuous pressure from players and developers, Sony has finally caved on crossplay.

The beta for crossplay starts today with Fortnite. PS4 players will be able to use their Epic account to team up with players on the Switch, X1, PC, and mobile. It even allows progression, something Sony blocked originally. So now, whatever progress you make on you Epic account, will carry over to other platforms.

In the press release they said

This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.

It sounds like if this is a success, we could see other crossplay games announced. I for one am very happy that Sony has caved on their stance. I believe more people playing these great games the better.

This now opens the door for console vs console tournaments.

I applaud Sony for doing this. Granted it took them forever, and their excuses were terrible, but they finally did it and thats all that matters.

Maybe now Square can release Final Fantasy 14 on the Switch, something they wanted to do earlier, but was blocked by Sony.

Jeremy Dunham, vice president of Pysonix, makers of Rocket League released a statement after the news.

We are really happy for the PlayStation and Fortnite communities and think that this is a great step forward. We know that Rocket League players and our own community want to know what this means for them as well, but we don’t have any updates at the moment. In the meantime, we recommend reaching out to PlayStation directly for any further comment.

This is a very happy day to be a gamer.
