Xbox President Sarah Bond Aims To Future-proof Backwards Compatibility Beyond Current Hardware

Xbox's modus operandi has been focusing on accessibility and convenience within their video game ecosytem. According to emails verified by Windows Central, newly appointed Xbox President Sarah Bond revealed that she has appointed a designated team committed to keeping Xbox's digital game libraries, including the backwards compatibility catalog, on current and future iterations of hardware. In 2021, Xbox quietly closed their backwards compatibility program, and Games With Gold came to an end, but the libraries on previous Xbox platforms remain available. The brand intends on keeping their back catalog, along with the expansion of Game Pass Ultimate, a part of their services.

Bond also indicated that Xbox's new machine is in the works that, in her words, is to be the biggest technical leap in an Xbox generation.

"It’s been nearly six months since we came together as an organization. Our collective achievements in that timeframe are tremendous. Everyone should feel incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the opportunities ahead," Sarah stated, "We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation."

Xbox's annual showcase is scheduled for June 9th, 2024, and could prove to be a strong showing for Micosoft's game division, now that the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is in their rear view mirror. Game preservation has been a hot topic among gamers, as licensing rights evaporate, causing software to run the risk of vanishing forever. This is seen by Nintendo, as the departure of the Virtual Console program on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U platforms saw hundreds of titles disappear.
